The Maldives, a nation highly vulnerable to the climate crisis due to its low-lying geography, is embarking on a project to create a floating city in collaboration with Dutch Docklands. This unique city, located near the capital Male, will consist of floating units tethered to the seabed on telescopic stilts, allowing it to adapt to rising sea levels. Designed to resemble a brain coral, the city aims to balance space and openness while ensuring sunlight reaches the seafloor below. Artificial coral banks will be integrated to foster coral ecosystems. The project prioritizes affordability, aiming for 90% local residents at prices similar to Male’s properties.
