The British Council has launched the inaugural “GREAT Talk” sessions in Bangladesh, a part of the UK government’s GREAT Campaign to promote the UK globally. The series, which began in India and concluded in Bangladesh, features UK professionals from various fields, focusing on climate change and sustainability. Professor Alison Greig from Anglia Ruskin University spoke about climate change’s impact and ways to prepare the younger generation for the challenges they’ll face. The discussions are particularly relevant for South Asia, including Bangladesh, which is grappling with the climate crisis. Rising sea levels are threatening Indian Ocean beaches, with levels increasing faster here than in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Global sea levels have risen about 10cm in the past 30 years, primarily due to melting polar ice and ‘thermal expansion,’ where warming water expands in volume. Coral reefs act as natural coastal barriers, but they face bleaching due to warming seas. Efforts to protect and restore corals are underway, such as coral propagation initiatives. Tourism, a significant contributor to the region’s economy, also seeks sustainability with stricter regulations, wastewater treatment, and bans on single-use plastics.
