This publication on “Mangrove-related policy and institutional frameworks in Pakistan, Thailand and Viet Nam<\/a><\/strong><\/span>” discusses the issue of mangrove destruction in several Asian countries over the past five decades.<\/p>\n

The destruction of mangroves has led to the loss of storm protection and livelihoods, reduced biodiversity in coastal areas, and increased carbon dioxide emissions.<\/p>\n

The publication highlights that sustainable coastal management is gaining importance in the region, and strengthening policy and legislative frameworks is crucial for the restoration and protection of mangrove habitats.<\/p>\n

For Pakistan, the publication explains that the country possesses significant land potential for mangrove restoration, particularly in areas of the Indus Delta affected by saltwater intrusion.<\/p>\n

Management of key mangrove areas by entities such as the Port Qasim Authority (PQA), Karachi Port Trust (KPT), and the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) is essential for Karachi’s ecosystem services, necessitating engagement with these agencies prior to restoration efforts.<\/p>\n

Creating a community endowment fund for funding mangrove restoration can promote responsible resource use, community ownership, and broader benefits.<\/p>\n
