Experts underline need for supportive public policies for small farmers

Historically, the contribution of the farmers of South Asia, constituting India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, to global warming was less than 4%, and even in the present, their carbon footprint is very small. However, the carbon-mitigation budget allocated to them is very small. The IPCC said South Asia should manage with just 6% of this budget, which will be a major challenge.
India to raise climate finance issue at COP27

India, having updated its nationally determined contribution (NDC) in August, will raise the issue of climate finance at COP27 in November to support large-scale deployment of renewable energy projects. Key topics for India at the conference in Egypt include a multilaterally agreed finance definition, a new collective finance goal beyond 2025, assessment of developed countries’ $100 billion/year climate finance commitment, and matters related to the Paris Agreement’s Article 2.1{c}. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged India to take a leadership role at COP27 for a balanced outcome on finance, adaptation, and loss and damage. India is also developing a net-zero emissions strategy for 2070.
