Adopted by a special session of the SAARC Environment Ministers in June 2006, the Malé Declaration recognizes irreversible damage to the environment and ecosystem caused by the earthquake and tsunami.
The Declaration highlights the need for rehabilitation and reconstruction in the affected areas, and underlines the need for communication of early warning through the SAARC Secretariat, the need for a recovery and reconstruction strategy, the need for identifying national focus groups, and the need for international donor coordination for developing programmes and projects.
