ADPC will discuss the recent cycle of reports produced by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

IPCC’s 6th assessment cycle reports range from physical evidence, adaptation and vulnerability, and mitigation of climate change impacts.

Panelist:

Dr. Hoesung Lee is former Chair of IPCC.

Key points:

  • Current efforts to combat climate change are falling short of the goal to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, as emissions have reached historic highs.
  • Emissions must peak before 2025 and then significantly reduce by 2030. Net-zero emissions are deemed essential, and carbon dioxide removal will be necessary to counter emissions from sectors that are challenging to eliminate, such as aviation and agriculture.
  • A rapid reduction in annual emissions, close to 7 percent per year, is stressed as a crucial pathway. Collaboration between authors and contributors in IPCC assessments has successfully promoted interdisciplinary approaches to climate change solutions.
  • Recent energy crises and supply chain vulnerabilities are seen as reinforcing the need to transition to renewable energy sources and achieve net-zero emissions.
  • Sustainability concerns related to land, water, biodiversity, and cost are highlighted in the context of bioenergy. Adequate funding is identified as a critical element for effective climate adaptation, especially in Asia.
  • Technology development is recognized as offering positive opportunities for mitigation and adaptation, with digital technologies and smart supply chain management playing pivotal roles.
  • The IPCC’s recommendations and reports can benefit low-income Asian countries in developing climate-related policies.
  • The next cycle of IPCC reports will focus on the challenges and opportunities posed by increasing urbanization and the need for more regional and local climate information.
