The Republic of Maldives’ contribution to global Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) emissions and, by extent, to the causes of climate change (CC) is negligible. Still, the country is one of the Small Island Developing States that is most vulnerable to climate change, which is a cross-cutting development issue affecting every aspect of the Maldivian way of life and livelihoods. Recognising the significance of CC-related issues is, hence key to the Maldives’ overall sustainable development and achieving its climate goals and targets.
The CC department at the Ministry of Energy and Environment is thus in charge of formulating policies and standards to address CC’s challenges in line with the legislative framework of the Republic of Maldives as well as international practices and conventions.
