Safeguarding children in South Asia from compounding shocks and stresses

Policymakers and experts met at the SAARC Secretariat in Kathmandu to discuss safeguarding children and families in South Asia facing climate disasters, economic shocks, and ongoing COVID-19 effects. Organized by UNICEF South Asia in partnership with SAARC, the event featured influential figures such as Nepal’s Foreign Secretary and the World Bank’s Vice President for South Asia. South Asia, with 628 million children, grappled with climate-induced floods and pandemic-driven economic challenges. The emphasis was on making investments in children’s well-being to secure long-term regional growth. Key recommendations included strengthening child-focused investments, advancing reforms in social sectors, and improving real-time data collection for informed decision-making.

Bangladesh seeks Germany’s cooperation in implementing NAP

The Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Md Shahab Uddin has asked Germany for help in implementing the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) of Bangladesh. The Minister said a total of $230 billion will be required to implement the newly formulated NAP to deal with climate change risks. It will be easier to implement if the developed world, including Germany, supports it.

Need for more representation of youth in climate-related policies

Panellist Namgay Choden from the Global Shapers said that the inclusion of young people in systemic change is crucial. “Good public policy is needed, and youth must possess relevant skills and knowledge to challenge key decisions.” Namgay Choden said that due to the lack of opportunity, there is a growing perception among youths that decision-making is only for the decision-makers.
