Bangladesh has imposed a ban on single-use plastics in the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest, due to damage caused by tourists and visitors who leave behind disposable water bottles, plastic food plates, and cans. The Sundarbans is home to rare species like the Bengal tiger and the Irrawaddy dolphin and serves as a crucial ecosystem. The ban covers an area of 6,500 square kilometers and was welcomed by environmentalists who had raised concerns about the impact of plastic pollution on wildlife in the region. The Sundarbans are also threatened by a nearby coal-fired power station and coal transportation.

The Maldives, a nation highly vulnerable to the climate crisis due to its low-lying geography, is embarking on a project to create a floating city in collaboration with Dutch Docklands. This unique city, located near the capital Male, will consist of floating units tethered to the seabed on telescopic stilts, allowing it to adapt to rising sea levels. Designed to resemble a brain coral, the city aims to balance space and openness while ensuring sunlight reaches the seafloor below. Artificial coral banks will be integrated to foster coral ecosystems. The project prioritizes affordability, aiming for 90% local residents at prices similar to Male’s properties. Construction begins later this year and is expected to be completed by 2028.
