‘Hotter and hotter’: Swathes of Asia sweat in heatwave

South and Southeast Asia are grappling with a severe heatwave, with record temperatures causing distress. Bangladesh experienced its highest temperature in nearly 60 years, and India reported at least 13 heatstroke deaths, while Thailand saw temperatures reaching 44.6°C. Experts attribute the extreme heat to climate change, with adverse effects on vulnerable populations. Climate Analytics warns of long-term public health challenges and emphasizes the disproportionate impact on the poor. Myanmar also faced scorching conditions, affecting activities like taxi driving. In response to the heatwave, people in Dhaka prayed for rain, while India suffered from temperatures well above normal, disrupting daily life.

Commonwealth National Climate Finance Advisers deployed to Maldives, Nauru and Seychelles

The Commonwealth Climate Finance Access Hub (CCFAH) continues to expand its support in the African and Indo-Pacific region with the deployment of three Commonwealth National Climate Finance Advisers to Maldives, Nauru and Seychelles. Developing countries have enshrined ambitious targets within their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). However, they are only able to attain these targets if they have adequate and accessible climate finance and are able to navigate the complex climate finance landscape. To do this they need to have the requisite human, institutional and technical capacity to meet donor requirements for funding proposals. This is where the Commonwealth Climate Finance Access Hub comes in.
