Temperatures seen surging as El Nino weather pattern returns

Temperatures are expected to soar across large parts of the world after the El Nino weather pattern emerged in the tropical Pacific for the first time in seven years, the World Meteorological Organization said on Tuesday. El Nino, a warming of water surface temperatures in the eastern and central Pacific Ocean, is linked to extreme weather conditions from tropical cyclones to heavy rainfall to severe droughts.

Parts of India have been hit by several rounds of punishing heat waves this year – in April, May, and again in late June, normally the start of the cooler monsoon season. In recent weeks, nearly 200 people reportedly died from heat-related illnesses in the northern states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. This comes as much of South and Southeast Asia grapple with the impacts of the El Nino weather phenomenon and climate change, effects that are changing life as many know it in ways large and small.
